Summer Reading and BINGO Challenge
The countdown to summer vacation has begun (at least it has in my house)! We were fortunate to have a representative from the Hillsboro Library talk with our students about the summer reading program at chapel last week. Summer reading is really important to help kids prevent the summer slide or brain drain that happens. I would love to see each and every TVA student’s name on the list from the library at the end of summer.
Here you will find several BINGO cards with different reading activities. I love these cards because they include reading activities that aren’t just limited to books. Some examples are map reading, poetry, reading and making something from a recipe, reading road signs, reading to a younger child and visiting the library. Remember, reading to your student counts too! Students that complete a BINGO card and return it to the TVA library when school starts will receive a special prize.
8th Grade Graduation
TVA’s 8th Grade Graduation will be held at our school’s gym on June 12th at 7:00 p.m. Please join us as we Celebrate with our 8th grade students.

Computer Programming Using Scratch
Games * Art * Animation
Have fun while learning computer programming with Scratch! Scratch is project of the Lifelong Kindergarten group at MIT Media Lab. Using Scratch software, students will design their own interactive stories, make art and animations, and design simple games. They will learn to create and share Scratch projects, learn to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively. They will learn concepts of computational thinking: using data and variables, sequencing, conditionals, loops, events, and mathematical operations. While adding more challenges to their games, they will become familiar with computational practices: incremental programming, testing, debugging, modularizing, abstracting, reusing, and remixing.

End of Year Library News
Thank you, parents, for helping your students remember to get their library materials turned in as we wind down the school year. This will make our inventory process much easier. Notices will be sent out the week of May 29th for students that have fines or lost books. Fines are payable in cash only at the office. Please put payment in an envelope with your child’s name on it and turn it into the office.
If your student has a lost book, it may turn up during inventory. If that happens, I will contact you via email. All charges for lost books will appear on your June statement.
Important dates for the rest of the school year:
June 12th – Last day to pay overdue fines
If you have any questions please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Washington County Library Summer Reading Program:
A representative from WCCLS will be providing TVA students with an introduction to the Summer Reading Program on May 25th during chapel. I believe registration forms will be available and sent home with students that day. Official registration starts June 1st.
The summer calendar of events is up for the library and I encourage you to go to https://www.wccls.org and check it out. There is always a wide variety of activities and programs to take part in. A family favorite summer event of ours occurs Thursday from 4:30 – 5:45 pm at the Hillsboro Main Library. Kids have an opportunity to Read to the Dogs. The dogs are so gentle and they love lying next to the kids as they read. If you are interested in participating in this event, sign up early, the schedule fills up lightning fast.
